LEATHER STRAP & HARNESS
Professionals know what they’re recommending. Especially after testing 7 competing products. This is the review Dmytro Sokobar wrote after a year of using our Camera Strap.
GenuineStrap Camera Strap Review by Dmytro Sokobar, a Berlin-based documentary photographer. One year of heavy use, travel across three continents, four seasons. Original text translated and contextualized.
"I’d like to start by saying that we’re proud to publish this review. Dmytro didn’t hold back on his criticism, and that’s what makes it valuable." GenuineStrap Team
Dmytro is a documentary photographer based in Berlin. He works for European travel magazines and on long-term editorial projects. Over the past 12 months, he has used the Camera Strap in Ukraine, Morocco, Vietnam, Norway, and at markets in Berlin: diverse environments, with temperatures ranging from -20°C to 40°C.
Before trying our product, he had tested 7 competing single straps, in order: Peak Design Slide, Black Rapid, Wandrd, Eddycam, Holdfast, Domke, Tamrac. His evaluation is therefore comparative.
Dmytro writes: 'After 12 months and 4 different climates, the patina that the Italian leather has developed is the most distinctive of all those seen in my previous tests. The areas where it rests most are slightly darker, while the rest retains its original color. You can spot my sling among 50 others.'
Tests at -20°C in Ukraine and Norway: 'The Italian vegetable-tanned leather remains flexible even at -20. The Peak Design strap I used in Lapland became stiff below -10. A clear difference.'
Vegetable-tanned Italian leather remains supple even at -20°C. It’s a significant technical difference.
Test in Vietnam in July (40°C, 80% humidity): 'No signs of structural damage, slight darkening in the contact area. Cleaned with a damp cloth and neutral cream upon return, looked like new.'
The 1/4-inch stainless steel screws and D-rings withstood 12 months of salt, dust, and humidity without any signs of oxidation. 'A test I saw the Black Rapid fail in 6 months in Bali.'
Dmytro points out two things: the maximum strap length (he’d like 5 cm more to wear it over heavy technical jackets) and the option of a metal slider instead of a leather one. We’re working on both.

All GenuineStrap purchases come with a 30-day no-questions-asked return policy. To make the most of this period, we suggest this 4-step testing protocol.
Days 13: Home and studio use, test shots, length adjustment. The leather is still stiffthis is normal. Feel how it rests on your shoulder and check for any unusual pressure points.
Days 414: First professional use (average photo shoot of 24 hours). The leather begins to mold to your body. Check for comfort and how quickly you can switch cameras. If you have a dual-slider strap, test both sliders.
Days 1530: Full professional use (wedding or full-day event lasting 812 hours). Only at this point can you truly judge whether the shoulder strap is right for you. If it isn’t, return it within 30 days.
A leather camera strap is best evaluated after a full wedding, not after 10 minutes in the studio. The 30-day return policy is designed for this.
No. Dmytro received a product to test and wrote the review a year later without any instructions from us. We are publishing it in full for transparency.
Yes. We have a testing program for documentary and wedding photographers. Send your portfolio to [email protected] with the subject line 'Product Test'.
Dmytro Sokobar’s Camera Strap review is the kind of feedback we value most: 12 months, 4 continents, and a comparison with 7 competitors. Criticism is just as useful as praise, and it helps us improve.
If you’re looking for a leather camera strap that works in any climate and improves aesthetically with use, the Vintage Brown is the model Dmytro recommends first.
