How to Mount the Camera Strap Clasp: Step-by-Step Tutorial

Tutorial mounting the clasp on a GenuineStrap leather camera strap

The question we get asked most often isn’t about the leather, the hardware, or the price. It’s always the same: Is the clasp really easy to open and close?

In this practical guide, we explain step by step how the GenuineStrap shoulder strap clasp works, why we chose that mechanism, and how to operate it with one hand even under pressure, right in the middle of a photo shoot.

"Opening and closing it is as easy as saying 'boom.'" Customer testimonial, 2025

What clasp does the GenuineStrap shoulder strap use?

The buckle on all GenuineStrap shoulder straps and harnesses is made of stainless steel with a satin or burnished finish, depending on the model. It’s a quick-release mechanism with a built-in safety lock: it opens with a twist of the thumb and closes with a firm motion that produces an audible click.

The design is reminiscent of nautical carabiners, from which it is derived. Reliable, resistant to salt, drops, and weight. It is designed to easily support two full-frame DSLRs with professional lenses for years of intensive use.

Each clip is individually tested before shipment under a 25 kg test load, well above the actual weight it will be subjected to.

The 4 steps for mounting the shoulder strap clip

1. Align the clip with the camera’s D-ring

Take the camera and locate the D-ring on the sides of the camera body. Position the clip with the safety lock in the open position. Rotating it with your thumb unlocks the mechanism: you’ll notice a slight play, indicating that the safety lock is open.

2. Insert the ring into the clip

Insert the camera’s D-ring into the opening of the clip. The mechanism is designed to accommodate rings that are slightly thicker than average, so do not force it. If you encounter resistance, check that the safety lock is actually open.

3. Release the safety catch

Release your thumb. The safety latch returns to the closed position by spring action. You’ll hear a metallic click: this is the signal that the clip is locked. From that moment on, the mechanism is self-locking and will not open accidentally, even if bumped.

The audible click is not just a cosmetic detail. It is the tactile signal that confirms the lock is engaged, even when you cannot see the clasp directly.

4. Check the seal before you go

Before you start shooting, always do a quick test: rest the weight of the camera on the clip for 23 seconds, then shake it gently. If it doesn’t open and you don’t feel any play, you’re good to go. This test takes 5 seconds and saves you from disasters.

When a clip makes all the difference

Three real-life situations where a good clasp saves the day:

  • Weddings where you’re on your feet for 12 hours. The shutter is automatic, your hands are fullthe clasp must never open by accident.
  • Reportage in a crowd. Bumps, shoves, people brushing past you. The clip’s safety lock is the difference between a safe camera and a broken screen.
  • Quick lens changes. Unclip in 2 seconds, clip back on in 2 seconds. It only really works if the mechanism is ergonomic.

Maintenance and Replacement Parts for the Buckle

The stainless steel buckle on the GenuineStrap shoulder strap requires minimal maintenance. Wiping it down with a dry cloth from time to time to remove dust and fingerprints is enough to keep it shiny. If you happen to work in a coastal area or in the rain, dry it with a soft cloth at the end of the day: this will prevent it from becoming dull.

All buckles are modular. In the event of damage (rare: our breakage rate is under 0.3% of shipped products), the replacement part costs just a few euros and can be installed at home with a 2mm Allen wrench. Contact us with your order number and we’ll ship the part to you within 48 hours.

The spring mechanism is designed for 50,000+ opening cycles. In practical terms, that means 30+ years of heavy professional use. You’re more likely to change cameras than to wear out a clasp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the clasp open if I bump the strap?

No. The latch is self-locking and requires an active thumb rotation to release. Bumps, jolts, and drops will not open the latch.

Can I replace the buckle if it breaks?

Yes. All buckles are modular and can be replaced separately. Contact us to order the specific replacement part for your model.

Does it work with all cameras?

It works with any camera equipped with side D-rings and with all camera bodies that have a 1/4-inch threaded mount for GenuineStrap screws. Compatible with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Leica, and Panasonic.

In summary

Mounting the GenuineStrap shoulder strap clip takes 5 seconds and a small twist of the thumb. The self-locking mechanism and tested stainless steel do the rest: your camera is securely in place for hours of worry-free work.
